Alexander Nevsky Cathedral
The most majestic and monumental symbol of Sofia. It is the largest functioning Orthodox cathedral in Bulgaria and the second-largest on the Balkan Peninsula.
Over 30 types of marble were used in its construction, and the entire interior is richly decorated with frescoes.
Due to its gilded domes, the cathedral is often referred to as “the golden heart of Sofia.”
National Palace of Culture
An iconic symbol of the capital and the country, the National Palace of Culture is a national cultural center for special events. It is a magnificent venue for bringing together young talents in the arts from around the world.
Banya Bashi Mosque
Sofia is often praised as an example of peaceful coexistence among people of different religions. In the city center, in close proximity to one another, you can find the Banya Bashi Mosque, the Jewish Synagogue, the Orthodox Church “St. Nedelya”, and the Catholic Cathedral “St. Joseph”.
National History Museum (NHM)
The largest and most prestigious museum in Bulgaria, and one of the largest in the Balkans, the National History Museum is located at the foot of Vitosha Mountain. Its monumental building, designed in the style of “socialist realism,” features grand marble foyers and staircases, carved ceilings, and exquisite crystal chandeliers. The museum’s exhibitions cover the entire period from prehistory to the present day.
The Rotunda of St. George
The Rotunda of St. George is the oldest preserved building in the capital. It is located in the inner courtyard between the Presidency and the Balkan Hotel. Today, the restored frescoes make the rotunda especially remarkable. Visitors can admire frescoes from three different eras, with the oldest preserved image being the head of an angel.
National Art Gallery
The National Art Gallery is the largest art museum in Bulgaria, located in the heart of Sofia. It occupies the central section and the northwestern wing of the former Royal Palace, sharing an entrance with the National Ethnographic Museum (situated in the southeastern wing).
